Common Tern:Eglwys Nunnydd Reservoir,Port Talbot

Thought it was a Black Tern at first when I saw it land but looks more like a Common Tern-adult winter bird.

Are you sure it wasn't an Arctic ?. Legs look quite short and bill appears quite small.

Fab shots! it wouldn't do that for me.

Hi Maurice, you're correct, having had another good look at some field guides I would agree.
I discounted Arctic Tern initially as I thought the bill was a little too long, but the shorter legs are a good pointer to Arctic.
I was just chuffed that I was able to get so close to the bird,it landed between the two jetties and I was able to use the crash barrier for cover to take some initial shots.
I then pushed my luck and legged it over the barrier and down on to the concrete apron,it wasn't in the least bit bothered so I was able to approach to about 8-10',the head shot is hardly cropped !!
Thanks for your observations.
Jeff
