I walked down there this afternoon, GSW on the cathedral side of the river.
Yeah - another observer posted today "no sign of LSW". Don't know thr original obs and must admit thought "singing" LSW was a bit odd - calling and/or drumming yes ...
the kikiki call is aften called singing as opposed to the much rarer middle pecker-like kew call.
Between 2003-6, a pair held territory throughout the breeding season between the weir and the Cathedral, centred around the area of alder carr which lies exactly where this report has come from. Interesting that the 'taff-cardiff' corridor once a 'hotpot' for this species has declined to rapidly since the 'heady' days when the species was so well distributed here.
Someone went there the day after on the strength of the original report, and was giving up when a kikiki type call was heard at the right spot. It turned out to be a Nuthatch doing it's pipipipi as opposed to chwit chwit call high up in the canopy. Nevertheless LSW cd still be around. I haven't seen one [in Wales] since I moved here 20 yrs ago!
