Photographing Breeding Birds

There are many concerned about the photographing of certain breeding species.
It`s a wonder there are any Dartford Warblers left in Glamorgan after the worst winter for decades. Also Little Ringed Plovers are arriving. I know how tempting it is to get that shot , but guys it`s a no no.
YOU NEED A LICENCE!!  stay away.

Taken from the other channel, quite apt: quote-""Apologies for not posting on the forum, but more people will see it here.

Many local experienced birders are becoming very concerned about the number of photographers staking out certain prospecting Schedule 1 birds at nest sites at this critical time. At one particular site there have been a number of photographers spending long periods photographing a pair of nest building Schedule 1 breeders very close to the nest site. Not only is this illegal without a licence, but it could affect the behaviour and subsequent breeding success of this species, which is on the brink in our area.

Please can the photographers concerned heed this and put the welfare of the birds first.""

wise words indeed,if you do stumble across anyone acting suspiciously around a known sch 1 site, please report the selfish tw@ to the authorities and ideally photograph them at the site.

Well said ,I will add that if I see any photographers near said birds for which I DO have a licence then I will report them to the CCW and they can take it from there.
On a more personal level if I see any of the two main culprits near the nest site then they are going to get it .
These two in particular have no regard for the birds, have no field craft and don't even carry bins, so they aren't birders in any sense of the word. They also appear unable to take friendly advice on board. Also the one there yesterday is a liar of the highest order...
To make matters worse most of the photographs the one takes are shite

Have you ever considered a career in international diplomacy.....

Yes I have and my current gig is down with the Iranians ;-).
The reason I am pissed off with these is that one in particular has been there over a three week period. Although he registered the fact that the bird was nest building at the start of this period he is still going to the site, he has no field craft other than real treeing himself up and standing only a matter of metres away from where the birds were building.
He or someone has indeed disturbed the pair, as I observed them yesterday (from a distance through bins, note to photographers, bins make the birdies bigger for you to observe at a safe distance) somewhere entirely different from where I had seen them nest building a fortnight ago, OVER AND OUT

There's no excuse for that. If he's been witnessed disturbing this or any other breeding bird it's time to do the decent thing and shop him to the law. If he won't take telling then breeding birds need to be protected against his ignorance, selfishness and gross stupidity.
I've even heard that this site is attracting a group of up to 6 photographers...is this true. If so, somebody needs to sort this out pronto.

Badger, surely there are enough clues in the posts above and on the other channel to identify the culprit.

In response the thread on GBC forum.

Fortunately the plonker does not/will not post on here,so we have none of his work/text to remove.

Judging by the overwhelming response regarding the situation on here,GBC and private correspondence,it would seem informing South Wales Police is best way forward (something I personally support),particularly when we learn that he and others have been told both publicly and privately to stay away from schedule 1 sites and have then duly ignored the advice.I would also like to state that we in no way condone the use of violence,as suggested by a number of people,it would be far better that he/they have their collar felt by the long arm of the law than you end up paying the prick compensation.

If we are talking about the person I communicated with, he always hyperlinks his web site on all his posts and on there is his e-mail address. See e.g. http://tinyurl.com/69ngsdt

Sorry that shd have been an active hyperlink. Just cut & paste it into yr browser and hit enter. It's a shortened version of a hyperlink to a relevant page of the GBC sightings.

I've left a guestbook entry on a certain photographer's website asking him to do the decent thing.

Jeff said...

Correction,my entry doesn't show up as apparently he's blocked all new entries, must be on some sort of guilt trip !!
Must also have skin like a rhino to leave the DW pics in his galleries.

Jeff said...

Correction-correction,the DW pics have mysteriously disappeared,PC Guildford must have come knocking !!

John Wilson said...

Indeed they have! Latest pics now are of the B-w Teal. Well done people.

As a kind of closure to all this I heard from an independent source this morning that the offender indeed does not have a Schedule 1 licence.

Slaphead said...

shock, horror,he has no sched1 licence?........ no surprise there then, given his attitude toward the whole scenario.

The person involved has been spoken to and has said that he will not visit the site again.
Although, reading the bullshit he posted on GBC regarding my crawling through the gorse (even though I was up in North Wales on this date) indicates that he hasn't taken things well.
If he had headed John and others friendly advice it wouldn't have come to this, hopefully this episode will serve to remind everyone of their obligations around all breeding birds
