Immmature terns are never easy, but I agree with Daryl. The wing panel, particularly the white secondaries would appear to indicate Arctic rather than Common Tern.
Yes, I have to agree with Arctic. Though the bicoloured bill threw me. Last week there was an obvious Arctic. Would be nice to get a close Common to compare!
I fecking hate terns. The best way of identifying 'commic' terns is by how hard they peck you on your head. An arctic tern hurts pretty bad, by contrast a common tern hurts like an utter bastard (add two chinese burns, a severe carpet burn and a major laceration using only a blunt object and you'll get the idea). The alternate way of seperating the two species is on taste. Waking each morning on the Inner Farne, wandering down the stairs of the Peel Tower and opening the door, yawning with the first blast through the nostrils of the putrid stench of a seabird colony and then immediately being defecated on by several thousand terns leaves one's taste buds atuned to such critical identification issues....I have to say (and I've said it before), you just don't get this sort or information from mere mortal websites, books and blogs. Keep tuned for next weeks thrilling episode.....'Cooking with seabirds-how to tell your auks by taste'? PS Slapper, this one's going into the 2012 SOoTY files.
Jeff, if you could return the Einstein before or even on the night of the curry so that this years recipient can benefit from the brilliance of its optical power it would be appreciated. This year will see a host of new awards to be dished out to the lucky few. News on these awards to be announced at a later date.

Cracking shots, when't up this morning no sign of any terns.
Yes definitely Arctic. Also look at short legs.
