2nd Janary 1998

Tomorrow is a very special anniversary. It's the last time I managed a world lifer in Glamorgan. It's the day the Wader stuck his head over the sea wall at Gileston and spotted an Ivory Gull. I won't bore everyone with the tale, as it's been told many times before, but suffice to say there are a few memories from that day:

The look of anguish on Steve's face when it appeared the bird had done a bunk and no-one would ever believe him!

The unabated joy when it reappeared late afternoon a few feet in front of us sheltering on the beach in an absolutely howling gale.

The "Where's PB and MCP ?" (they were watching a Bean Goose in Welney and had to tick the obvious escaped Ivory Gull at Blackpill a few years later tut tut).

Anyway, guess where the Wader is heading tomorrow morning ????

At 12.35 I will hopefully relive that moment at the steps like I do every year! Birding my patch as often as I did produced many good birds. The Ivory Gull blew me away!!

could nt leave work for that one but saw the later one at Swansea, my 3 rd for UK having "jammed-in" on one on a Portland w/e, the 1 st brings back memories of having to leave a New Year dance at the Marina ballroom in Penarth 1970/71 to catch overnight trains to South Shields, seeing fellow-twitchers crawling out from underneath an upturned boat on the shingle where they had spent the night & great relief when the bird duly obliged - ah, memories !!

Sounds like a classic twitch at Gileston... Fairplay to the Wader for such a great find. Stuff of dreams.

Did not see either Glamorgan bird due to work but one at Ferrybridge in 1980 saved the day. Remember reading about the one Cliff mentioned but it was before I was twitching. Anyway bunked off to Somerset with HLJ today and saw Lesser Legs, Slav, L. T. Duck. R.C. Pochard & G. N. Diver but dipped on Spotted Sand.
