The guy whose garden it was in probably didn't fancy having his roses trampled !

Not really suppression, more a selective viewing. Just glad I live in South Wales and not Devon. At least that type of thing doesn't happen up here ;-)

Wylon Smithers is doing a mighty fine job of it right now.

Ring,ring....ring,ring...

Do we know how many "invited guests" there were?
It stinks really; how many birds in gardens could genuinely not be seen from a public footpath, road, park etc adjacent to the garden? If locals are concerned, let the police know what's likely to happen and they'll control the parking issues, crowds etc.. What really pisses me off is the decision the finders make to just invite a selected few rather than taking a more rational approach and doing as I've suggested above or just never telling anyone about the bird. In my mind it's simply one-upmanship to achieve bragging rights. I know it's happened locally and that's both sad and very hard to justify.

Surely it's up to the owner of a property, who and how many they want to invite on their land, i don't see a problem, it's called tuff luck, i know if i had a mega in my garden, then only a selected few would be invited, i wouldn't want half of glamorgan trampling around my garden either, it's nothing personal, and people shouldn't take it personal, simples.

You miss my point Paul. I'm not suggesting that the hoards should be invited on to your land but that, with a bit of organisation, people could watch the bird from neighbouring points which have public access. The Orphean Warbler in Pembs would be a good example of that and there are many others I can think of.

Well Paul, please don't feel too pissed if/when a decent bird turns up in someone's garden and you are not on their selected invitation list.

You either suppress it,full stop or you broadcast it and make it available to all,not just the few who then put a fucking video on youtube to gloat about it.I have nothing against suppression if that is what needs to be done, what most are against is selective, divisive suppression for the sake of your own snide ego.

Slaphead, it doesn't bother me one slighest if i never get invited as i dont regard myself as a twitcher. Yes i have been to twitches in the past and will prob go again if i fancy it, but i definetly wouldn't lose any sleep if i got turned away as i respect people's privacy. Why should you make it available to everyone just because you've broadcasted it to the world. If it was me and i found a mega in my garden yes i would broadcast it to the whole world but would i invite the world definite no.Does that make me a bad person? Seymour i see your point yes if there are places you can view from public i agree.

The problem with selective invitations is that there will always be someone who is next person in the chain who misses out. If I have a good bird in my garden, I will invite Seymour in on the the understanding he doesn't tell PB or Portly. The Wader can come in but he better not tell Slap or Randal. Sorry Maurice you are out but Matt you can come in as long as you don't tell the Gwent boys........ Having a wide circle of birding contacts it's impossible to have a select invite without treading on toes or creating bad feeling. That's why for me it's all or nothing. If I have a bird in the garden and I want to keep it quiet then I would just forget it ever existed and never tell anyone. However the problem with any suppressed bird is that unless you tell someone else it holds no value. Several recent examples spring to mind, rather than just submit the record and let it appear in due course in the relevant bird reports, people are on line as soon as the bird disappears days afterwards crowing and posting pics/videos. Never been to see a bird where news is not going to be released and never will. Some people have different principles and that's up to them.

Alex the trouble is you cant win, what about the sib chiffchaff that mark hipkin and barry stewart posted that was kept in the dark and posted at a later date, they got slated for that, and all they did was keep the owner's wishes that they didn't want a tribe of people there. And most of the people that made the fuss were toggers. The biggest problem is that a lot of birders/toggers need to grow up and accept the fact that sometimes you cant always get what you want, if someone doesn't want you there then that's life chin up and move on, life's too short.

The problem with that bird,an Iberian chiffy, was that it was'nt just the 2 ppl you have named who were permitted to see it,it was and I quote "a handful", now I am no OxBridge graduate but that could be 3 or possibly more (as 2 is a couple), we have since heard that at least one other who saw it came from Cardiff, but as yet he has decided to stand behind the others and remain (or so he thinks) anonymous.

Maybe the ones that made a fuss were toggers,it would have been nice to get a shot or 2 of that IC to compare with the previous one.The majority of people who twitch would have seen the 1st Welsh record the year before in Wentwood, the one we are talking about was in Carms,so I doubt if many gave that much of a stuff anyway.I know not of anyone who keeps a Carms list this end.

Now that I know that Alexander wouldn't 'have me' in his garden to look at his rare little dickie bird, I have to say, I agree with Paul.

That aside, I wonder what the collective noun is for a group of suppressing birders?

A congregation? A shrewdness? A herd? A covert? A pod? A team? A fling? A bell end?
