I have been watching these Lapwings since they were very young chicks - as you can see they are now flying and yet so tame it is unbelievable. Tonight a bird came to within less than a metre from my truck, I watched it feed and bathe!
Obviously too close to photograph! They bathe and preen every few hours!
I gave up during the wet period recently they were too far for a good shot, so now we have a dry period they are coming closer to the entrance of the field to bathe.
Unfortunately the mother usually keeps her distance. Dad did wander to within 15 ft once but light and grasss cover prevented any great shots.
Five pairs have reared at least 20 young. Perhaps a few weeks left and they will be gone but hopefully return next year.
The farmer had marked the nests and is very proud of the fact he has these on his land and of course a good few |Hares.

Excellent news regarding a declining species Steve. Also agree with Alan in that there seem to be more Cuckoos around this year.
Nice photos Steve!
