Western Palearctic birding sites

The wrecked coach quarry half way up the Golan Heights, Israel - formally Syria! The site for Syrian Serin. Julian (seen below) and myself had 3 there on our trip to the Holy Land in 1989.

On a beach in sunny Eilat just after Mr. H. tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to chat-up a rather attractive Israeli girl. We saw her later in a soldiers uniform - I think the saying goes - "she was only a tank commander's daughter".

I think I ended up chatting to some bird from Cwmbran in the end! Oh well, can't win 'em all.....

Saved a few quid on the car hire then!

In '89 that was an Israeli hotrod Steve! We wrecked the original vehicle when we drove it up a wadi and ripped the gear selector rod out of the undercarriage and this was our replacement....

We also saved on hotel bills. As you see, Judd is testing our bedtime arrangements below. Travel light - travel far!

When I was in Israel with PB I seem to remember the hire car company telling us we weren't covered for any damage on the underside of the vehicle....it's all making sense now ! However, we too decided to drive it up a few Wadis but clearly PB was a more skilled driver than you pair !!

We too visited the Golan heights. We had the amazing experience of thousands of White Storks dropping into land all around us as dusk approached on the way back down. We also had tea in a nearby McDonald's. Several months later whilst watching the TV and a news article on border skirmishes with the Lebanon I thought I recognise that McDonald's car park..... There was film of a mortar rocket which landed in the car park!

Alex - the words "skilled driver" are absolutely not synonymous with Phil Bristow!!

If you remember Judd, they fixed the gear selector, it was me smashing the back end up reversing into the ringing station signpost that we had to have the new car. Hence the fact that a they gave us the Noddy car - which we had a puncture.
As for the McD - do you want to go large with that rocket?
