Glaucous Gull : Wernffrwd

Few record shots from a visit by "Pedro" and myself this morning, bird was feeding on a sheep carcass opposite the church on marsh road about 150m into the saltmarsh, bird was quite flighty and mobile flying one time about 400m east but returning to area near carcass.

Cheers Rob,if you're going for it just be careful that the "Bird Police" from the other channel aren't watching you !!

excellent shots Jeff as usual, need this for my files !

I heard the bird was being observed at sensible distance and that a 'Glamorgan' togger (no name given) flushed it within mins of arriving with zero 'fieldcraft' and it fucked off. A load of bollocks, or a realistic account? Cheers M

I was'nt there, but I have it on good authority that someone with a Canon 500mm f4 is used a shotgun to flush a gull, in his defence the canon user allegedly said "look butt, I ain't come all this way not to see the fucker fly",a colleague of the Canon man,who was using a far superior Nikon lens also added " next time shoot the bastard,at least it will stay still long enough for you to get a decent shot".
All in all it was a terrible day for the Maesteg front rifles, they missed the target and upset the locals, tut, tut.

Thanks for clarifying Slap.

Spot on Slap, couldn't have put it better myself, you weren't watching from a safe distance were you?
(Which allegedly is more than we did !!)

Couldn't you get any closer it comes nowhere near filling the frame - this is a serious drop in standards!
Cracking flight shot!!!

You did really well there Jeff,i went this afternoon and had no chance,i've never seen a more nervous gull,as soon as i got out of the car it was alert and flew off as soon as i got the scope out,and i'm talking of 3-400 yards. It was being scared off the Sheep carcasses by any other gull that fancied,'WHAT A WHIMP'for a Glauc.

You've obviously honed your "fl.......g" technique more than I have Rob!
In fairness it does seem to be a very wary individual and is very difficult to get anywhere close to although I'm sure someone will prove me wrong.

It wouldn't be bad if there was just the one carcass but there are loads,i could see 7 from where i was standing.Otherwise a hide would have been good.
